Trentatre chilometri a sud-est di Bari, sulla costa adriatica. Ecco POLIGNANO A MARE, ridente cittadina dagli antichi natali.
E' indiscutibile la remota origine dei primi insediamenti. Meno certa la provenienza dei costruttori. "Le testimonianze più antiche del popolamento umano nel territorio di Polignano a Mare, sembrano riportarci al Pleistocene superiore" (F. Franco Favale).
Mons. Pompeo Sarnelli, Vescovo di Bisceglie dal 1692 al 1724, fa risalire il primo stabile villaggio, a Caio Mario che, navigando in Adriatico, giunse sulle nostre coste.
Con l'ausilio di un Falcone (u' castarille), fece costruire una torre che in seguito denominò Polimnia" (nome di una musa) mentre dal nome del condottiero "Mariano", prese la digitura il porto in località S.Vito (Locus Marianus), quattro chilometri a nord ovest del centro abitato.
Nicola Uva, noto scrittore polignanese, afferma che si trattò di storia leggendaria e, da altre fonti, si evince che la cittadina fu posta in essere dai greci e denominata POLYMNIANUM che significa, luogo "edificato in alto".
Altri storici confermano che fu sì colonia greca ma denominata "Maganza" e poi "Apenestae". Altri ancora son sicuri che si chiamò "Neapolis Peucetorum".
Di certo è che son state trovate monete con il dorismo "NEAP" e si pensa che, tra Bari ed Egnazia, sorse una colonia marina, la cosiddetta Neapolis, poi rinominata Polis-nea (città nuova), Polineanum in seguito Polignano ed ora Polignano a Mare, da un idea di Bartolomeo Giuliani notaio in Polignano.
Nota interessante:
Due centri abitati, denominati Polignano, sono presenti in Italia e precisamente in provincia di Piacenza. Il primo è allocato a circa 23 Km. a est del capoluogo, il secondo ad una trentina di Km. a sud della stessa città (vedi foto 1 e 2 a fondo pagina).

Here sits POLIGNANO A MARE, a smiling small city of ancient birth, 33 km southeast of Bari, on the Adriatic coast.
The distant origin of the first settlements is indisputable.
What is less certain; however, is the origin itself of its first
settlers. "The most ancient testimonials of human population in the territory of Polignano a Mare seem
to take us back to the early Pleistocene period" (F. Franco Favale).
Monsignor Pompeo Sarnelli, Bishop of Bisceglie from 1692 to 1724, raised the first permanent
village at Caio Marino, who, while navigating in the Adriatic, reached our coast.
With the assistance of a Falcone (known as "u' castarille"), he constructed a tower, which he later named "Polimnia" (the name of a muse). From the name of the leader "Mariano" came the name of the port in the area known as San Vito (Locus Marianus) 4Km North-West from the village.
Nicola Uva, the famous Polignanese writer, affirms that this story was a matter of legend and that, from other sources, it is evidenced that the tiny city was realized by the Greeks, and named Polymnianum which means place "constructed on high".
Other historians affirm that it was indeed a Greek colony but it was named "Maganza" then "Apenestae".
Others still, are sure that it was called "Neapolis Peucetorum." What is certain is that coins were found with the gilded "NEAP" on them.
Between Bari and
Egnazia a marine colony sprung forth, the so-called Neapolis, which was then re-named
Polis-nea (new city), later Polineanum, followed by Polignano and now Polignano a Mare
from a Bartolomeo Giuliani's idea, attorney in Polignano.
Interesting note:
Two other inhabited centers named Polignano are found in Italy, and, more precisely, in the province of Piacenza. The first is found roughly 23 km east of the capital, the second at approximately 30 km south of the city (Photo 1 and 2).
